North Canton Sewer Department

Home > City Departments > Sewer Department

Recent work being done on the Glenwood Sewer Project
(October 2007)

The City of Canton's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit requires North Canton to implement a Satellite Sewer Discharge Control Program (SSDCP). One of the Requirements of this program is the implementation of a Sewer Maintenance Program (SMP). The North Canton SMP is based on the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's (OEPA) Best Management Practices (BMP) for sewers.  The SMP establishes practices for use in controlling bypasses and overflows of the sanitary sewer system.

The City of North Canton has a separate sanitary system.  The SMP is the responsibility of the City Public Works Department and is supervised and coordinated by the Superintendent of Utilities & Service of a representative appointed by the Director of Administration.  Day to day maintenance, sewer cleaning, minor repairs, and emergencies are handled by City personnel.  Extensive sewer cleaning, testing, inspection, and major repairs and replacements are performed by outside contractors or as authorized by the Director of Administration.

Maintenance of the system consists of preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance programs.  However, the SMP emphasizes the preventative maintenance program.  The preventive maintenance program reduces sewer failures, pumping station failures, improves the operation efficiency of the system an prolongs the life of the system.  Corrective maintenance includes the repair of the equipment and structures immediately before or after a breakdown or failure occurs.
